Link Velocity for Real Estate SEO

Build too few links and you stay invisible. Build too many too fast and Google's SpamBrain flags you. Here's the safe range by site age.

    What Link Velocity Means

Link velocity is the rate at which your site acquires new backlinks over time, usually measured per month. Google's algorithms (specifically SpamBrain since 2022) compare your current rate to your historical baseline and to your industry peers. Sudden spikes from a low baseline are the single biggest unforced error in link building.

Safe Monthly Ranges by Site Age

Site AgeDR RangeSafe Links / MonthNotes
    New (under 6 months)DR 0-102-5Foundation citations + 1-2 editorial links
Young (6-18 months)DR 10-205-10Mix citations and niche editorial

    Why Spikes Are Dangerous

Google's SpamBrain (Google Search Status Dashboard, 2022 launch) treats abnormal link velocity as a probabilistic signal of paid or scheme-based link building. The classifier doesn't penalize the site immediately. Instead, it devalues the offending links so they pass zero ranking signal. You spent the budget. The links sit there. The rankings don't move. That's the most common version of "link building doesn't work for real estate."

Pair a velocity spike with exact-match commercial anchor text and you can also trigger Penguin (Google, integrated into core algorithm since 2016).

    Why We Drip-Feed Every Campaign

Drip-feed indexing means deploying the month's links across 4 weeks instead of all at once. For a 10-link package, that's roughly 2-3 placements per week, with intentional spacing between similar source types. The goal is to make your link acquisition curve look like organic growth, not a coordinated campaign.

How to Spot a Velocity Problem in Your Own Profile

    • Open Ahrefs Site Explorer → Backlinks → New tab
    • Plot referring domains by month for the past 12 months
    • Look for any month with 3x+ the surrounding months' link gain
    • If you see one, audit those links: are they topically relevant? Are they on real sites? Are they from the same IP block or theme?

If the spike came from low-quality sources, consider disavowing the worst.

    What "Natural" Velocity Looks Like

Natural link growth generally looks steady, with links added gradually over months and years. Not all at once. Not in spikes. The pattern matters as much as the volume.
