Disavow
Last updated:
Quick definition: Disavow is a Google Search Console tool that tells Google to ignore specific backlinks pointing to your site.
What it means
The disavow file is a text file uploaded to Google Search Console listing domains or URLs whose backlinks should be ignored. It was created in 2012 to give site owners a way to repudiate clearly toxic links.
Google has stated repeatedly that most sites do not need a disavow file because the algorithm already ignores low-quality links.
Why it matters for real estate SEO
Aggressive disavowing can hurt more than it helps by stripping out legitimate links. Use only for clear, manual-action-level toxic links from spam networks.
