    Keyword Cannibalization

    Last updated:

Quick definition: Keyword cannibalization occurs when two or more pages on the same website compete for the same keyword, splitting ranking signals and weakening both pages.

    What it means

Keyword cannibalization happens when multiple URLs on your site target the same query intent. Google has to choose which page to surface, and link equity, click signals, and crawl attention end up split across the competing URLs.

The fix is usually consolidation: merge thin overlapping pages, set canonical tags to a single preferred URL, or differentiate the pages by intent (transactional vs. informational).

Why it matters for real estate SEO

Real estate agents commonly cannibalize themselves with multiple "best realtor in [city]" landing pages, neighbourhood pages that overlap, and blog posts that target the same buyer guide query. Auditing for cannibalization can recover lost organic traffic without any new content investment.
