PageRank
Quick definition: PageRank is Google's original algorithm for measuring the importance of a webpage based on the quantity and quality of links pointing to it.
What it means
Developed by Larry Page and Sergey Brin at Stanford, PageRank treats each link as a vote of confidence. Links from high-PageRank pages count more than links from low-PageRank pages, and links pass value recursively through the web graph.
The public toolbar PageRank score was retired in 2016, but the underlying algorithm remains a core part of Google's ranking system.
Why it matters for real estate SEO
Understanding PageRank explains why a single backlink from the New York Times can outweigh hundreds of links from low-quality directories. For real estate agents, prioritising fewer high-quality placements beats large-volume cheap link campaigns.
