Glossary Term

    Thin Content

    Last updated:

Quick definition: Thin content refers to pages with little or no original value, including short word counts, duplicate text, or auto-generated pages that fail to satisfy user search intent.

    What it means

Thin content was first targeted by the Google Panda update in 2011 and is now governed by the Helpful Content System. Pages flagged as thin lose ranking power and can drag down the entire domain.

Common thin-content patterns include scraped MLS feeds with no commentary, near-identical city landing pages, and AI-generated articles published without editing.

Why it matters for real estate SEO

Real estate sites are particularly vulnerable because IDX feeds and templated location pages create thousands of low-value URLs. Pruning or noindexing thin pages often produces a measurable ranking lift across the remaining content.
